McHenry basement fire causes ‘significant’ damage
MCHENRY — A fire in the basement of a one-story McHenry home caused significant damage Friday afternoon.
The McHenry Township Fire District was dispatched to the home on the 1000 block of Chesterfield Court in McHenry around 4 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the district. When firefighters arrived, they saw black smoke billowing from the home. Smoke detectors had already alerted a man inside the home to the ongoing blaze, and he was able to escape without injury, the release stated.
Emergency crews then worked inside the house to contain the fire to the basement, and no firefighters were injured.
According to the release, there was significant heat, smoke and water damage, but McHenry Fire Battalion Chief Mike Majercik said there was not yet a cost estimate of the damage Saturday morning. McHenry Township Fire District and McHenry Police Fire investigators are also still working to determine what caused the fire. Majercik said the cause does not appear to be suspicious.
Crystal Lake Fire Department assisted McHenry in extinguishing the flames, Majercik said.
